Encara no acabe d’entendre per què en els ebooks cal passar pàgina. Abans d’aquesta reinvenció recent del llibre electrònic, se suposava que el text digital era un continu que flueix. I així funcionava sense anar més lluny Bookshelf, una de les primeres aplicacions de lectura que vaig provar amb l’iPod dos anys abans de l’iBooks d’Apple. Simplement et desplaçaves amunt i avall pel text, com faries amb qualsevol altra aplicació normal i corrent que treballés amb textos.

Llàstima que tot el programari posterior centrat en l’ebook, se suposa que més sofisticat, i sobretot els peixos grossos del negoci (Apple, Amazon), hagin preferit aferrar-se a la metàfora del llibre de paper en lloc d’aprofitar l’experiència informàtica prèvia dels usuaris. Perquè, per exemple, en iBooks, com se selecciona un fragment a cavall de dues pàgines, per subratllar-lo, copiar-lo, anotar-lo, etc.? Una acció en principi tan senzilla, tan natural, esdevé complicada i incòmoda per culpa d’una metàfora antiquada.
